Being Effective vs Being Efficient at Work

Some people tend to confuse efficiency with effectiveness . The two terms have totally different approaches. Being effective is about doing the right things while being efficient is about doing

You run a tight ship. Every process hums. But are you building the *right* ship?

Many founders confuse efficiency with effectiveness. They're not the same. Efficiency means doing things right. Effectiveness means doing the right things.

Doing things right matters less than doing the right things.

Efficiency versus Effectiveness

Consider this story from The Gary Halbert Letter:

"Parkersburg, West Virginia sits on the east side of the Ohio River. It's about 30 miles south of Marietta, Ohio, which is on the west side of the Ohio River. Got all that?

Let's pretend some guys want to reach Marietta, Ohio. They're in a canoe, paddling very efficiently. Except, they're on the Mississippi River, not the Ohio River.

They've mastered canoeing. Their J-stroke is perfect. They get maximum forward movement from each ounce of expended physical effort.

Now, take two other guys. They're paddling their canoe north on the Ohio River, leaving Parkersburg. They also want to reach Marietta.

These guys are terrible canoers. They don't even have paddles. One guy uses his shoes. The other paddles with his bare hands."

Who reaches Marietta?

The super-efficient team is on the Mississippi River, miles from the Ohio. Their effort won't get them to Marietta. The second group, despite its lack of efficiency, has a clear goal. Their efforts focus on that goal.

Every day, in your business and your life, your effort needs a compass. You must focus on being effective. This means you:

  1. Map the work. Build the strategy and actions from that map.
  2. Stay fixed on the strategy. Prioritize ruthlessly.
  3. Measure against goals, not just activity.
  4. Flex when needed. Find new routes to the goal.
  5. Define success by goals met.
